End Sickle Cell Across Planet Earth (ESCAPE) is Committed to Eradicating Sickle Cell Disease Through Community Engagement
Through patient-centered practices, ESCAPE delivers evidence-based public health education that addresses the questions of the vulnerable members of the community while respecting their social and cultural perspectives.
Our Education Strategies
In-Person Visits: Representatives of ESCAPE visit schools and other academic institutions to encourage members of vulnerable communities to know their sickle cell status. For those with SCD or the sickle cell trait, we strive to develop follow-up programs that are socially sensitive and respectful in the effort to prevent propagation of the condition.
Print Publications: The organization provides publications on SCD to those with a stake in the effort to eliminate the disease. Stakeholders include persons with the sickle cell trait, persons with SCD, their families, teachers, employers, and members of their respective communities.
Media and Social Media: Media is an important part of the education strategy. ESCAPE showcases individuals knowledgeable in various aspects of the organization’s effort. Physicians, nurses, caregivers, religious leaders, government representatives, and other professionals lend their voice to discussions on radio, TV, podcasts, YouTube, and other media platforms.
Campaigns: ESCAPE has both on-going and one-off campaigns to raise awareness of SCD and how to eliminate it. The organization strategically involves the broader communities in the campaigns and not just members of vulnerable groups. This is important because community knowledge of SCD reduces the stigma associated with having the disease.
