Our Mission
Though sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most devastating and deadly molecular disease, very little is known about it. This is in part because it a rare disease and primarily affects people of African origin. On much of the continent of Africa, even less is known about SCD and its manifestations are often shrouded in myth and superstition. In the West, it is seen as a “Black man’s disease” and for a long time it did not receive the attention it merits. With the realization that its impact goes beyond racial bounds, attitudes towards SCD have been changing, presenting the healthcare community a chance to address the inequities and biases pertaining to the care of persons with the condition. Our mission is to raise awareness about sickle cell disease across the world and give vulnerable communities the will and resources to eradicate it.
