Our Vision

Our vision is to ESCAPE!

End Sickle Cell Across Planet Earth.

Our Mission

Though sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most devastating and deadly molecular disease, little is known about it. This is in part because it a rare disease and primarily affects people of African origin. Across much of of Africa, the most affected continent, even less is known about SCD and its manifestations are often shrouded in myth and superstition. In the West, it is seen as a “Black man’s disease” and for a long time it did not receive the attention it merits. With the realization that its impact goes beyond racial bounds, attitudes towards SCD have been changing, presenting the healthcare community a chance to address the inequities and biases pertaining to the care of persons with the condition.

Our mission is to raise awareness about sickle cell disease across the world and give vulnerable communities the will and resources to eradicate it.

Our process is honest and thoughtful, but respectful.

Sickle cell disease is a complicated debilitating and devastating condition and the conversations about it are not easy. At ESCAPE, we have believe avoiding them is simply slapping a bandaid over a festering wound. In discussions with members of vulnerable communities, we urge them to:

  • Know their sickle cell status

  • Know their intimate partner’s sickle cell status

  • Understand what it might mean for them to have their own children.

  • Understand the options:

>Adoption

>Fostering

>Co-parenting

>Mentoring

>Remaining childless

We strive to remain respectful or our clients perspectives and opinions. By having tough, honest conversations, we can all ESCAPE - End Sickle Cell Across Planet Earth.
