Research shows that sickle cell disease (SCD) is among the top 20 leading causes of death among children under the age of five-years. Recent studies also showed in 2021, over 500,000 children were born with SCD. What this says is that more children are now born every year who will not live to see their fifth birthday because of this disease. This is not right. It is inexcusable.

This situation exists because many potential parents are unaware of their sickle cell status and only learn of it after their child develops symptoms later confirmed to be SCD. This situation reflects the lack of knowledge about SCD in the general population. It further shows the lack of risk awareness among members of this vulnerable population such that they continue to have children afflicted with this condition. End Sickle Cell Across Planet Earth exists to try and stem or even reverse this trend through education and awareness.
